1. Introduce Yourself
Like almost any other interview, the first question will require you to introduce yourself. This is your chance to present a coherent and engaging summary of your background, education, and professional experience.
Start with a brief summary of your educational background, then highlight relevant work experiences, and conclude with your personal interests or career aspirations. Keep it concise (1-2 minutes). Practice a structured response to build confidence and clarity.

2. Your CV
The interviewers will have your CV with them, which will serve as their primary reference. Expect questions related to your CV, such as:

a. What do you do in your current job?
b. Why have you been unemployed if applicable?
c. Can you explain any gaps in your employment history?
d. Why have you changed jobs frequently?
Your responses will likely lead to follow-up questions, so be prepared to provide detailed explanations.

Tip:
Focus on your current and previous roles, emphasizing achievements that relate to the position you are applying for. Explain gaps in employment honestly, framing them positively (e.g., self-improvement, skill development) and reinforce how those experiences have prepared you for this role.

3. Questions on Course of Study
For graduate trainee roles, expect questions related to your academic background. You may be asked:

a. How do you think your course is relevant to NNPC?
b. Can you explain specific concepts from your studies that apply to the oil and gas sector?
c. Technical questions may arise, especially if your background is in engineering or accounting.

Tip:
Relate specific coursework or projects to the skills required for the job. For example, if you studied mechanical engineering, discuss how those principles apply to equipment used in oil extraction. Be prepared to break down complex topics into layman’s terms if needed.

4. Questions on NNPC
You could be asked about NNPC’s subsidiaries, divisions, and their functions. Common questions include:

a. Where do you see yourself fitting within NNPC?
b. Can you discuss the roles of various divisions in the company?

Tip:
Research NNPC’s subsidiaries and their functions prior to the interview. Your answer should reflect an understanding of the company’s structure and objectives. Mention how your skills align with one of the divisions, indicating where you see yourself adding value.

5. Questions on the Oil and Gas Sector
The interview may cover your understanding of the oil and gas industry in Nigeria, including:

The distinctions between upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors.
Contemporary issues affecting the industry, such as the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), local content policies, and fluctuations in oil prices.

Tip:
Ensure you understand and can clearly articulate the three sectors. For instance, describe upstream as exploration and extraction, midstream as transportation and storage, and downstream as refining and distribution. Provide examples of current issues affecting each segment (e.g., the impact of global oil prices).

6. Questions on Current Affairs
Current affairs related to the oil industry are likely to come up. Be prepared to discuss:

The current petroleum minister or NNPC Group Managing Director (GMD).
Recent developments in OPEC or significant industry changes.

Tip:
Stay updated with current events, particularly those related to NNPC, Nigeria’s oil policy, and international oil market trends. Mention specific events, policies, or figures (like the current petroleum minister) and provide your perspective on how these developments could affect NNPC.

7. Question About Future Goals
Expect questions that assess your motivations and aspirations, such as:

What are your salary expectations?
Why do you want to join NNPC?
Where do you see yourself in five years?

Tip:
This is your chance to align your career aspirations with the company’s objectives. Describe how you envision growing within the company, emphasizing your willingness to negotiate based on the overall compensation package and opportunities for growth, potentially taking on more responsibilities or leadership roles while contributing to NNPC’s goals.
